The benefits of having a trained, experienced coach:

"A good racquetball player does not a coach make."

What that statement simply means is this - just because someone is a good player, it does not automatically make him or her a good coach. One must take in the whole picture before making adjustments to a players game. It's not as simple as one might think to coach someone through a racquetball match. There are intricate and technical aspects of the game that the normal, even experienced player will never see.

I have seen time and time again a well-intended friend try to coach someone only to make things worst. Now, there's no guarantee that a trained coach with years of experience will have a quick fix or all the answers to turn the game around. However, the experienced coach is your best option. Even one that is not there with you. If you have trained and prepared properly your coach should be able to sit back and watch with little interaction during a match.

As an experienced coach, most of my coaching takes place outside the competitive arena. I will do everything a coach needs to do for you during your training. It will be up to you to take what you have been taught and apply it during a match.

Goals

Goal setting is a crucial part of any training schedule and competitive success. It's like taking a vacation. You have to know where you want to go before you pull out the map to plan the route you want to take to get there.

You and I will come up with goals that will drive your training schedule. These goals should be difficult yet attainable. I will assist you in setting these up and modifying them as you go along. Your goals will be set up in a similar manner as follows and updated monthly.

  • end-of-season goals

  • 90-day goals

  • 60-day goals

  • 30-day goals

Training and Training Schedules

The complete racquetball-training program is extremely complex. You have to take into account competitions and decide which ones are important enough to peak for and which ones you want to train through.

A complete training schedule is comprised of many athletic disciplines. Competitive racquetball athletes require training, practice, and concentration in all of the following areas:

  • mechanics

  • drills

  • court positioning

  • shot selection

  • game management

  • game/match preparation

  • strength

  • speed

  • footwork

  • endurance

  • mental

  • flexibility

  • nutrition

Without getting overly complex I will, in consultation with you, develop at strategy in designing a training program specifically for you. This will take into consideration your goals, life style, competitive schedule, and training facilities/equipment available to you.

The different phases of your schedule will include:

  • Phase 1 - Off Season

  • Phase 2 / Preseason 1 - Strength

  • Phase 3 / Preseason 2 - Power

  • Phase 4 - In-Season Maintenance

Pre / Post Game

If there are any two areas that are the simplest to accomplish, yet most commonly over looked, they are:

  • pre game planning & preparation

  • post game evaluation

RU will train you on how to accomplish these two easy tasks. These are two areas that we require all our athletes to do. The benefits are beyond measure.
