Pictures Map Notes
Entrance to Icebox Canyon is accessed in the NW section of the park via the Lee Pass Trailhead in the Kolob Fingers area. It is a long strenuous route requiring technical skills and experience to negotiate. This is not a good route for beginners. Additionally, this hike is best done in two days rather than trying to do it one very long day. Be sure of your skills and how fast you can move through this canyon. Getting caught here overnight unprepared could be disastrous.

This is a reservation / permit route. So be sure to plan ahead and obtain your reservation before making the long trip to Zion's Park. Some walk-in permits are available, but this is risky depending on the time of year. You can go to ReservationsAndPermits for more information.

This is a 12.25 mile route with an elevation change of 2700 ft. / 823m. The average hiking time is 16 hours and the longest rappel is 145 ft. There is a section of the route that will require an up climb resulting in 1100 ft. in .5 miles. Permits are required.

Icebox Canyon is not well established. Although the canyon itself is fairly easy to follow, getting to and out of the canyon require excellent map / GPS navigational skills. You will also have thick brush to hike through during. Stay to the water fall line and the canyon wash floor as much as possible. Don't make new trails. Some bolts and hangers are already in place. These may need replacing, if so please do so with quality equipment. No need to place any more artificial hardware in this canyon.

There are nine total rappels with the longest at 140 ft. / 43m. The first five raps are in sequence from the ridge of the canyon to the canyon floor. Here is a breakdown of the rappels:

  1. 140' single bolt anchor
  2. 120' single bolt anchor
  3. 120' double bolt anchor
  4. 140' pine tree anchor
  5. 140' three bolt anchor
  6. 30' down to a pool - can be avoided by traversing after initial 20' descent
  7. 20' with two slot swims of 30' each
  8. 20' single bolt to a lake
  9. 10' possible to down climb
