CANYONEERING / can-yon-eer-ing / "kan-y&-'nir-i[ng]: the sport of exploring, trudging, climbing, scrambling, jumping, hiking, abseiling, swimming, leaping, squeezing, chimneying, crawling, spanning, traversing, rappelling, and navigating technical slot canyons. Utah is rich with adventure from its snow caped mountains to its deep slot desert canyons. The diversity of this grand playground makes it one of the most sought after places to visit and explore in the United States. You've heard of 31 flavors ice cream. Well, this is 40 flavors canyoneering. We offer 40 different canyoneering adventures for all ages, all abilities and all tastes. We can take you on a route that will tax every aspect of your very being or we can lead the family on a morning sunrise hike though cool deep narrow canyons and/or to incredible natural arches and bridges that will produce memories lasting a lifetime. All you need do is decide on the adventure that's right for you. Imagine waking up at 0500 and watching the sunrise over the desert vistas to the East, then turning to the West and seeing the sun's rays bounce off the canyons walls, all while eating your breakfast and preparing your mind, body and gear for the 8-10 hour arduous trek. Next is the invigorating uphill march while blazing and trudging your way through unmarked trails to the the awaiting canyon. All-the-while witnessing the grandeur of the landscape in the early morning desert. The canyon. The task is now at hand. This is what you have been waiting for. Now the real work begins. You labor together with your guide(s) and teammates solving problems on how to negotiate huge boulders, rock walls, steep crevasses, bone dry or water filled potholes, as well as setting up anchors for rappelling long steep canyon cliffs. You suffer through the intense heat and hope the next pothole is filled with water to swim in so you can cool down your overheated body. Or, you long for the next deep narrow canyon ahead which will bring cool air and shade to oppose the unforgiving sun. Finally, hours later, you are at the mouth of the canyon, it is conquered, and you find satisfaction in knowing you accomplished your task. It was you against nature and you won. You proved to yourself you have the grit it takes to shoulder an awesome task and come off the victor. Now comes the long and tiresome slog back to base camp. You're tired, hungry, your energy is drained from the battle with the chasm. But, you dig deep in your reserves to find the gained strength that comes from the satisfaction and honor in your accomplished quest. You share the day's events with your colleagues. The time quickly passes and you are back to the starting point. All is finished except the long awaited rest during the ride home and a stop for a final meal before the trip is over. The majesty of this unique state brings with it a sensation of adventure that calls to the inner sole. It beckons the outdoor adventurer to come and test his / her skills against the best nature has to offer. Technical canyoneering is one of the most grueling and demanding sports to challenge man in the state of Utah. It is challenging to the mind, spirit, brawn and sole, while unforgiving to the unprepared and unwary trespassers of this serious sport. One cannot merely take for granted a technical canyoneering trip as an morning stroll in the desert or afternoon trail hike in the mountains. Canyoneering demands respect and must be approached with the same reverence you would afford free falling out of an airplane. Many lives have been taken by this exciting sport due to the lack of esteem and preparation canyoneering requires. It demands skill, experience, plus a knowledge and understanding of its insidious dangers. Yet, with all that said, canyoneering is a rewarding and exciting sport that anyone with a sense of adventure, who wishes to challenge his / her resolve against one of the best outdoor sports there is, it awaits. If you seek a thrilling, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally taxing outdoor sport which offers some of the most incredible breath taking views the inner and outer desert has to offer, canyoneering is it. If you think you've done it all, but haven't experienced the spine-tingling thrill of 200' overhang rappels, technical scrambles over 30' boulders, traversing 100' vertical rock slabs, squeezing and crawling through narrow canyons, climbing into and out of 30' potholes, jumping 75' deep crevasses that are 10' wide, weathering 110 degree desert heat and 50 degree swims, all in one day, then you need to take a crack at canyoneering. This is the sport which separates the adventurer from the sightseer and athlete and the spectator. It's not for the curious. It is, however, for the individual who wants to know what he / she is made of. It is for the person who wants to push to the limit and experience the satisfaction of accomplishing a task that demands the most you have to give. Let TPC Sports / Canyoneering Utah's professional guides take you to the deep desert canyons of Utah where you can experience and test, first hand, the thrill and beauty of mother nature at her best.
