Pictures Map Notes
Behunin Canyon one of the easier technical canyoneering canyons in Zion National Park. It is a fairly exposed canyon with many long drop-offs. This is a wonderful canyon to do when the weather is cool or damp due to it's primarily dry nature. However, it does have some water pools and collection, so wet shoes are in order if you don't want your hiking / climbing boots wet.

This is a reservation / permit route. So be sure to plan ahead and obtain your reservation before making the long trip to Zion's Park. Some walk-in permits are available, but this is risky depending on the time of year. You can go to ReservationsAndPermits for more information.

The canyon ends at the Emerald Pools (same location as Heaps Canyon) which is within walking distance to the main lodge. It has a hiking gain in elevation of 2400 ft. / 732m with a round trip distance of 8.5 miles. Permits are required to hike this canyon.

Behunin Canyon is well established with easy an easy to find route and trails. Some social trails have evolved over the years, but their us is  discouraged due to the impact on the environment. Stick to the water fall line and the canyon wash floor as much as possible. Some bolts and hangers are already in place. These may need replacing, if so please do so with quality equipment. No need to place any more artificial hardware in this canyon.

If you like long rappels, this is one of the fun canyons in Zion to do. Behunin has eight raps in all. The first one is the longest at 165 ft. Here is a breakdown of the raps:

  1. 165'
  2. 120' with overhang
  3. 100'
  4. 75'
  5. 40' into a pool
  6. 40' into a pool
  7. 100'
  8. 155' with a 110' overhang
